The Spirit of "Philoxenia"
In Greece, the act of sitting for coffee and sharing treats is an essential expression of Philoxenia, or the tradition of being "friend to a stranger."
This ritual is intentionally unhurried; the custom is to linger for hours over a single cup. It creates a quiet space away from how frantic & rushed modern life can be.
Sharing a coffee & treat like melomakarona or baklava is a simple act of generosity. It welcomes companionship and a commitment to being present with those around you, respecting their time and prioritizing genuine human connection above all else.
Πορτοκάλι - "Orange"
For us, creating authentic Greek treats is a way to honor our family's heritage. Our very name, Portalios, which means "orange maker," is a direct and beautiful link to flavors of Greece. Though our family's roots are deep in the groves of Crete, this name signifies more than a location—it signifies a dedication to quality and flavor. Every sweet we craft is an expression of this tradition, ensuring that Kouklas not only carries the memory of the Portalios name but also shares the rich history and taste with you.
Why We Started
Growing up, it was evident that my grandmother’s (Yiayia’s) love language was cooking and baking. Her nickname for me was “Koukla”, which translates to "doll". A typical term of endearment. I was taught by her how to craft everything in the kitchen through touch, smell and taste.
In the summer of 2022, I was struggling to find a balance. I wanted to enjoy sweets without guilt, restriction, or discomfort. That’s when I turned to my Yiayia’s recipes for comfort and inspiration.
Each batch was a reminder of how far I came and how I crave to share this brand with the world. It’s made to honor my Yiayia’s hands, her spirit, and her belief that the best food is made with feeling. It’s a thank you to her because without her, I don’t know where I’d be.
I have found so much joy in being able to cook/bake for others & cannot wait to see how this business grows!
